The average price of gas topped $4 per gallon this last week as the cost of oil soared over $140 a barrel. As the holiday weekend draws to a close, the cost of gas is expected to dip - but only slightly.

Reality can be painful, and there is no more painful reality to America's working families than this: high gas prices are a permanent fixture of our economic landscape.

Last week, I was sitting on a blanket at Jazz in June enjoying the nice weather, friends and a little background music. With thousands of people milling about, it's easy to tune out the crowd. Finally, Iowa has joined the ranks. This day could not have come soon enough for me.

Last fall, I had my first truly enjoyable pub experience. The music was fantastic, the company entertaining and the brew a treasure for the palate.

And it wasn't even my 21st birthday.
